Sundakkai Vathal

Known as Turkey berry or Solanum torvum and as Sundakkai in Tamil- with a bitter taste when plucked fresh, the berries can be consumed directly or used in cooking.
The 'vathal', popular in South India, is a preparation of the plant's berries marinated and dried with salt and buttermilk. The fried 'vathal' is less bitter and is used as a standalone dish or in traditional South Indian recipes, to add depth and complexity.
They are also used in Siddha medicine to improve digestion, and are considered a rich source of iron.
